AMES Water System Chlorination

The quality of water supplied in the UK is of a high standard. If water is stored or used for process purposes however, the risk of harmful bacteria such as Legionella, E-coli and Coliforms. Water system chlorination is a straight forward method to help reduce or remove these risks. It works by killing off bacteria that may have multiplied in your water system.

Left untreated, waterborne bacteria can multiply to dangerous levels. This can lead to severe health problems, or even death, when people come into contact with infected water. Legionnaires’ Disease, Pontiac Fever and E-coli infections are very serious.

A one off water system chlorination can help to eliminate water-based bacterial colonies. A routine schedule of cleaning and chlorination is the best way to increase your confidence as it greatly reduces the risk of a bacterial disease outbreak ever occurring.

Chlorination Helps To Prevent Bacterial Build-Up

AMES offer a bespoke cleaning and chlorination service for all types of water systems. We only used approved treatments, chemicals and cleaning methods to reduce bacterial risks.

Our professional and effective water-system chlorination is particularly applicable to companies using:

  • Cooling Towers & Evaporative Condensers
  • Cold & Hot Water Tanks
  • Air Conditioning Units
  • Swimming Pools
  • Jacuzzi & Hydro Pool

Chlorine Dioxide Treatment

Chlorine dioxide is a chemical which is extremely effective as both a disinfectant and as an oxidant in water treatment. It does not react with organic materials or with most treatment chemicals (corrosion and scale inhibitors) present in cooling water systems.

The disinfectant properties of this chemical are the reason it is used in many different roles and systems. Chlorine Dioxide has been approved by the drinking water inspectorate for use in drinking water applications. It is also used within cooling water process systems.

This treatment has the unique ability to penetrate bio-film, and quickly kills bacteria from the outside in. Proper dosing ensures that no bacteria (including legionella) can survive in the treated water system.

Chlorine Dioxide Generators

AMES Water Treatment supply and maintain a large number of chlorine dioxide generating units to hospitals, food processing plants, office blocks and other industries throughout the UK.

Our experienced representatives can advise on the optimal system suitable for your particular application along with an effective on going management and monitoring regime.

For more information on chlorine dioxide treatments throughout the UK or any of our other water treatment analysis and treatments please get in touch.

Cleans and Disinfectants

The cleaning and disinfection of water systems on a regular basis is vital if hygienic conditions are to be maintained. The effectiveness of a water treatment regime such as corrosion inhibitors and biocides when used in cooling towers is also strongly influenced by the cleanliness of the system.

British Standard 6700

This standard relates to new domestic pipework installations and states that new installations or modifications should be disinfected as part of commission cleaning before being placed into service.

The method to be used is set out in the standard, detailing the contact times and disinfecting agents to be used. Heating, ventilating and pipework contractors that use our service will have the disinfection certificated on completion of the work and before the building is placed into use.

Legionnaires Disease 'The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems' ACOP (L8)
The HSE Code of Practise relates to the control of legionnaires disease and recommends that as part of a complete maintenance and management scheme that regular cleaning and disinfection of the following equipment is carried out:

  • Cold Water Storage Tanks And Down Services
  • Hot Water Calorifiers
  • Cooling Towers And Evaporative Condensers
  • Air Humidification Plants
  • Water Outlets And Shower heads
  • Water Features
  • Misting Systems

The frequency of cleaning and disinfection is twice annually for cooling towers and once per annum for hot and cold water services. Other systems will have the frequency established in the risk assessment and logbook, but in general is dependant on the risk of the system and the potential for contamination.

Cooling Tower Cleaning and Disinfection
In general a thorough clean and disinfection of a cooling tower is best achieved by removal of the cooling tower pack.

This approach to the cleaning and disinfection of cooling towers is taken whenever possible by AMES water treatment service technicians. Where it is not reasonably practicable, AMES Water Treatment have developed a specialised range of products for this application.

Shower head Descaling and Disinfection
Showers deliver water at around 45°C, making them a perfect place for bacteria to grow. Because showers are used sporadically, long periods of stagnation give the bacteria chance to multiply.

Shower heads act as filters, trapping debris and scale. These act as a nutrient and a safe habitat for bacteria. It is therefore vital that showers are cleaned on a regular basis as part of an overall legionella control programme.

Water System Refurbishment

Poor quality water due to the formation of rust, scale, debris and biological deposits make the hygiene of water storage tanks an essential part of a maintenance programme. Our specialist water system refurbishment service can restore existing water storage tanks to HSE and Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999.

Where the condition of a tank makes replacement a preferred option, we can also supply new tanks. If cooling towers do not conform to the HSE requirements, we can replace the cooling pack, install or upgrade drift eliminators and refurbish corroded tanks.

Cooling Towers

The maintenance of cooling towers is an essential requirement of the HSE, ACoP L8. Many older cooling towers do not conform to this guide and require modification to enable maintenance operations to be carried out.

We offer the following refurbishment services:

  • Replacement of badly scaled or damaged cooling pack
  • Upgrading of drift eliminators to higher efficiency
  • Installation of access hatches to make the removal of pack and drift eliminators easier when cleaning and chlorinating
  • Refurbishment of air inlet louvres
  • Refurbishment of tanks and sumps
  • Installation of dosing equipment
  • Installation and servicing of water softeners

Water System Temperature Monitoring

Monthly water system temperature monitoring can be a time consuming, manual task that may often be overlooked . However, it is a legal requirement that checks are carried out at all premises other than domestic dwellings.

Records must be kept showing compliance with recommended temperatures for hot and cold water within a system. When properly performed, this helps to keep the risk of contamination and bacterial spread to a minimum.

Unmonitored water systems, without a control regime can quickly develop serious Legionella contagion. The affect can be damaging to the health of those nearby as  well as the legal or financial repercussions.

AMES Legionella Control Water Temperature Monitoring Services

We can provide you with the tools and paperwork to carry out your own temperature monitoring regime.  Alternatively, we can take the burden off you by providing a monthly service to conduct the monitoring schedule on your behalf.

Where other systems such as cooling towers, swimming pools or whirlpool spas are on site, a separate temperature monitoring regime is also necessary.  Our experienced, professional water sampling and treatment technicians are as reliable as they are efficient.  Trust AMES to keep your water systems safe and compliant.

I Need My Tanks Cleaned & Chlorinated

Although there is no legislation demanding that cold water storage tanks should be cleaned and chlorinated annually, it is good practice do so.

Internal inspection of the tank also helps to decide whether or not a tank needs cleaning, as well as legionella, TVC and potable sampling (which must be carried out on an annual basis or six-monthly for tanks providing drinking water).

The Drinking Water Inspectorate does, however, demand that tanks providing drinking water be cleaned annually. Furthermore, tanks should be cleaned and chlorinated when the systems they serve undergo modifications or when a possible legionella outbreak is suspected to have taken hold.

Full Service

If you need advice on whether or not your tanks require cleaning and chlorination, AMES are here to help.  We can inspect the tanks and pride ourselves on our cost effective cleaning service. Furthermore, if you commission us to carry out a legionella risk assessment on your building, the survey will detail all tank cleaning necessary and will provide a timescale upon which it should be carried out.

To arrange an inspection and cleaning of your water tanks, please get in touch with AMES Legionella Control using the details below.
