Pest Control in Coventry: An Historical Overview

Coventry became one of the most notable cities in England during the Middle Ages due to its booming cloth and textiles trade. The city has been remembered for its part in the English Civil War and later became an important industrial city during the 19th and 20th centuries. The devastating Blitz in 1940 destroyed much of the city centre, and saw its rebuilding during the 1950s and 60s. The motor industry, which Coventry is particularly famous for, slumped during the 1970s and 80s, during which time Coventry saw high rates of unemployment.

Coventry’s Beginnings

English Map

Coventry is an ancient city that is believed to be more ancient than nearby Birmingham and Leicester. It is likely that Coventry grew from a settlement of the Bronze Age near the town centre where large flowing rivers and lakes created the ideal settlement area. Coventry was a scattered settlement until Leofric, Earl of Mercia, and his wife Godiva founded a church which was dedicated in 1043. By the end of the 14th century, Coventry had become the fourth most powerful city in England.

Economic Crisis

Dollar Bill

When the 16th century arrived, Coventry’s economy fell into crisis, marking the beginning of a slump that has characterised the city’s history right up to the present day. However, Coventry is famed for its ability to pull a new industry out of the hat when it desperately needs it. And their new industry, in this case, came in the shape of bicycles. From humble beginnings in the 1860s, the city quickly became the home of the British cycle industry, attracting engineers and entrepreneurs with rapidity. But then the Daimler company began building cars and a new industry was born, one that would lead the way towards the city’s extraordinary 20th century expansion.

20th Century, Industrial Developments

Industrial Revolution

The city continued its prosperity throughout the 20th century. The success of the cycle and motor industries had brought into existence a wide variety of subsidiary trades. Most notable were the trades of general engineering, metal casting, drop forgings, chain-making and the manufacture of aircraft, aero engines and related equipment.

Despite all its attractions, Coventry has a pest problem that we are keen to resolve! Coventry has been famed, throughout history, for its infestation of rats. Rats, as we know all too well here at Ames Solution Ltd, are carriers of disease. There are many factors that are encouraging the rats to breed in Coventry but one of the major reasons are the milder winters. The cold is no longer killing the rats which is allowing them to continue breeding.

The most rat complaints tend to come from the north of the city, with areas such as Foleshill and Longford having the most call outs.
